BIO

Overview: Sarkar Nahid Niazi

Sarkar Nahid Niazi, also known affectionately as “Nipu,” is a distinguished Bangladeshi artist celebrated for her innovative exploration of texture, form, and memory through unconventional materials.

Early Experimentation

During her student days at the Institute of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, Niazi began experimenting with plywood panels and wooden surfaces instead of traditional canvas. Her pieces, such as Broken Door 2, depicted antique, weathered doors with three-dimensional elements—melding imagination and realism through tattered textures and vivid touches of blue. In a 2003 solo show titled “The Ruin” at La Galerie, Alliance Française, she continued her fascination with wooden windows and doors. Some works were painted directly on wood, integrating wooden fragments into layered compositions that oscillated between realism and constructed illusion. The Daily Star

Themed Texture and Abstraction

Niazi’s work repeatedly revolves around capturing textures of wood—its grain, decay, and memory-laden surfaces. In a 2013 exhibition at Bengal Gallery, her stunning “wood composition” pieces, painted in acrylic on canvas, board, and wood, stood out for their earthy tones and abstract forms that evoke both nostalgia and new meaning. The Daily Star

Critics and viewers appreciate how she elevates everyday, discarded wooden objects—boxes, planks, shutters—into hauntingly beautiful abstract forms. Her art is often described as a poetic intersection of beauty and decay. The Daily Star

Manyfestation Exhibition

In her sixth solo exhibition, “Manyfestation” (2023) at Alliance Française de Dhaka, Niazi presented about 25 works created with acrylic paint on canvas, wooden surfaces, and even cardboard boxes. Her artistic vision was guided by giving “new life to old, worn, and rusty systems.” Through color and texture, she transformed mundane materials—especially wood—into vibrant, rhetorical, yet realistic artworks.
